Orford is the perfect place for anyone who wishes to get away from the hustle and bustle of day-to-day life and wishes to enjoy the peace and quiet of a village little changed over the years.
Orford is a beautiful spot offering a perfect base for walkers, cyclists, artists or those who wish to wander down to the river to watch the fishing boats go by! It lies within the Suffolk Coasts and Heaths Area of Outstanding Beauty.
Orford has an enchanting history, largely having grown since Henry II commissioned the popular Castle to be built in the 12th century. Once upon a time, Orford was a bustling commercial and fishing port, however as Orfordness spit continued to grow it became harder for the boats to enter the estuary mouth, just 5 miles from Orford. The quay, whilst still used for smaller fishing craft and river tour boats, was built by the Normans, as was the stunning church in the village centre.
Orford has plenty to offer with regards to eating and drinking. It boasts two fabulous pubs, The Jolly Sailor and The Kings Head, as well as some superb restaurants, especially Pinney’s fish restaurant. One of our favourite places to go is the Pump Street Bakery, which is world-famous and offers especially delicious food and drink!
Orford has Tennis Courts and a Recreation Sports Ground with its own Clubhouse and children’s play area. Football is played on the Recreation Ground, which is also the site of the Annual Flower Show in August. Other sports and societies thrive including Bowls, Sailing and Badminton.
The village is 20 miles from Ipswich, 12 miles from both Woodbridge and Aldeburgh and 5 miles from the famous Snape Maltings complex, popular for its magnificent Concert Hall and nearby Galleries and Shops. Orford and its immediate surrounding area are renowned for culture and good eating.
Guest access
Whilst the entire garden is available to guests, consideration is expected when the owners are in the main house - Shallow End also has its own private part of the garden with a table and chairs to sit outside and enjoy the sunshine.
Other things to note
Please don't be concerned about the hut being at all cold, it is very well-insulated and has been completed to a high standard with good effective electric heating which is perfectly adequate for even the coldest of nights in winter!
We spent 6 great days walking, kayaking and sightseeing in this beautiful part of Suffolk. Shallow End is a charming, comfortable and perfectly proportioned little home tucked away in a peaceful location next to Orford quay and the River Ore - overlooking Orford Ness with its fascinating history. The owners (and their two dogs) were extremely welcoming and helpful and we highly recommend a stay here.
A great place to stay in a lovely village by the river Alde/Ore with impressive views over to the Ness and the sea beyond. The accommodation itself is really well fitted-out and overlooks a very large garden again with views to the sea beyond. The hosts are very friendly and should you have any problems (we didn’t) they’re just next door. The accommodation and location certainly more than met our expectations and it’s as nice a place as we’ve stayed at.
Lovely, tranquil spot. I’ve stayed there before and would love to go back again in the future
We had a lovely week in Orford and "Shallow End" was a good base. It is small, but the layout and amenities have been carefully considered. The owners were friendly and helpful. We enjoyed coastal walks, beach trips, a boat trip and lots of great local food and drink. If you plan to spend lots of time in the accommodation, it might feel a bit small, but as a base for the days' adventures, it was great!
Beautifully presented. Quality fixtures and fittings. Everything a couple could need. Very close to the quay with lovely walks either side of the property. Great food in the local pub. Welcoming hostess. Have booked again for early next year.
Perfect bolt hole! The cabin is in a lovely spot, very private and quiet. Our second time visiting. Lots of lovely walks and nice places to eat.
A small but well equipped bolt hole in a stunning village.
Shallow End is a comfortable and well designed small space. We thoroughly enjoyed it as a base for exploring Orford and the Suffolk coast and countryside.
All excellent.
