Woodbridge history
People have lived in what is now Woodbridge since the Neolithic Age (2500–1700 BCE). A ritual site uncovered during wind-farm excavations shows early activity, and the Romans later occupied the area after Boudica’s failed rebellion in 59 CE. The Anglo-Saxons followed, ruled by King Rædwald, whose burial ship – Britain’s most significant archaeological find- was discovered at nearby Sutton Hoo. While the originals are in the British Museum, replicas are displayed in Woodbridge Museum.
Woodbridge itself is first recorded in the mid-10th century, when it was acquired by the Bishop of Winchester. The Bigod family later controlled much of the land and built Framlingham Castle to the north. The town became known for boatbuilding, rope-making, and sail-making – even Edward III and Sir Francis Drake had their fighting ships built here.

Where to walk in Woodbridge

Head east to Rendlesham Forest and explore the many trails there, including Daisy’s Walk (2.75 miles/4.3km), the Phoenix Trails (0.75 miles/1.2km and 3 miles/5km), and the exciting UFO Trail (3 miles/5km) inspired by the famous spaceship sighting in this very forest.
Traverse the River View Walk, which takes you across the Sutton Hoo estate. It’s circular, to bring you right back where you started, and leads you through colourful woodlands while offering gorgeous views across the river to Woodbridge.
Go further east towards the Suffolk coast to Orford, hop on a boat from Orford Quay, and explore RSPB Havergate Island. Rich in wildlife, scenery, and peace, you could spend an entire day discovering this island via its trails.
How to get to Woodbridge
Woodbridge is a very well-connected town, with its own train station and plenty of bus stops. The train line that runs through Woodbridge is the Lowestoft to Ipswich line, stopping at Lowestoft, Oulton Broad South, Beccles, Brampton, Halesworth, Darsham, Saxmundham, Wickham Market, Melton, Woodbridge, and Ipswich. Ipswich station has a direct line to London, meaning you can get from England’s capital to Woodbridge by train in only one hour and thirty minutes.
The bus routes running through Woodbridge reach far and wide across Suffolk, including Felixstowe, Debenham, Framlingham, and Orford.
For those driving, Woodbridge is on the A12 and very easy to reach. If you’re coming from Ipswich, the nearest large town, simply follow the A12 north for about 20 minutes, then take the third exit on the Grove Road roundabout onto Grundisburgh Road, and you’ll find yourself in the heart of Woodbridge.
Getting around Woodbridge town
Woodbridge is a walkable town thanks to its small size and most of its activity being on The Thoroughfare, with everything you could need easy to reach on foot. It’s well connected to public transport routes leading in and out of town, too, so you’ll find the area simple to navigate.
