The best fish and chip shops on the Suffolk Coast

Fish and chips in Lowestoft
Lowestoft sits at the very top of the Suffolk coast and is the most easterly point in the UK. This means that it’s the first place in the UK to see the sunrise, making it a very popular beach for early birds looking to bask in that gorgeous orange glow of the morning sun. Lowestoft itself is a busy hub, home to family-friendly golden sand beaches, the thrilling Pleasurewood Hills theme park, the East Point Pavilion, and plenty of town attractions.
While enjoying the vast beach and rolling waves, tuck into some of the best fish and chips Lowestoft has to offer. Here are the local favourites:
- Oulton Road Fish & Chip Shop – Fresh fish, light batter, and great value for money, Oulton Road is a local favourite. For takeaway only, we recommend digging into your dish on the beach.
- The Jolly Sailors – This beachfront restaurant offers a very popular fish of the day dish, battered with a side of mushy peas. Sit inside or get an outdoor table to watch the waves while you eat.
Fish and chips in Southwold
Southwold is beloved by all who visit Suffolk, adored for its picturesque scenery and British charm. Its beach is sandy and clean, lined with beach huts and perfect for spending a day sunbathing or playing in the sea. Southwold is known for some of Suffolk’s best fish and chips, and we couldn’t agree more with its reputation. Grab a portion and settle down in a quiet spot on the beach to enjoy.
- Sole Bay Fish Company – Incredibly highly rated, this famous fish and chip shop is sit-in or takeaway to suit your mood (and the weather!). Not only can you get your classics to eat there and then, but you can also buy fresh seafood from the on-site fishmongers to take home.
- The Little Fish & Chip Shop – Owned by the Sole Bay Fish Company, this sister location offers proper fish and chip classics to take away and eat on the beach. This spot typically has queues winding down the street, but we promise it’s worth it.
- Mrs T’s Fish & Chips – Another Southwold favourite, Mrs T’s is known for fish cooked to crisp perfection. Everything is fried in rapeseed oil, making their chips vegan, so everyone can tuck in. Mrs T’s has won a TripAdvisor’s Traveller’s Choice Award in 2025, placing it in the top 10% of restaurants on the site!
Fish and chips in Dunwich
A stunning and historic spot on the Suffolk coast, Dunwich is a must-visit for those who like to learn about the past. It’s a peaceful, pretty village with a remote beach that’s natural and wild in the best way, and ancient monastery ruins just waiting to be explored.
Dunwich is very small, which is part of its charm, so you won’t find a takeaway shop here for your fish supper. They do, however, have a fantastic cafe and well-loved restaurant, both serving fish and chips that’ll have your mouth watering.
- Flora Tea Rooms – This lovely little cafe, situated right by the beach, is beloved by locals and visitors alike. The fish is caught locally and fried in their secret recipe batter to produce golden, crisp bites you’ll love. Tell them if you have dietary requirements, and they’ll do their best to accommodate.
- The Ship at Dunwich – This restaurant is a must-visit and draws guests from near and far. Hearty flavours, local ingredients, and a classic fish and chips dish that’ll blow you away. Sit inside the boldly decorated restaurant or out in their sunny outdoor seating. You can even bring your dog – they have a menu for pups!
Fish and chips in Aldeburgh
Aldeburgh simply cannot be missed when visiting Suffolk. This serene seaside spot is made for lovers of coastal towns, and it’s travelled to from all over the country for its charm and beauty. The shingle beach, mix of old and colourful houses, and countless places to eat and drink pull in visitors all year round. It’s also a hub for arts and culture, with the renowned Aldeburgh Festival, a celebration of classical music, held there each year. Aldeburgh offers plenty of eateries that serve up brilliant fish and chips.
- The Lighthouse – If you’re after the restaurant experience, head to The Lighthouse. This restaurant is a staple of the town, boasting a decadent menu made up of locally sourced ingredients, including beer-battered fish and chips that are often mentioned in their glowing reviews.
- The Trawler’s Catch, in Saxmundham – Not in Aldburgh, but as Suffolk locals, we’re here to help you out with a hot tip. Beat the huge queues in Aldburgh and head slightly further out to grab your chips from The Trawler’s Catch. Delicious, crispy fish and piping hot chips await at this traditional takeaway.
- Seahawks, in Leiston – Just as above, we’re offering a local tip to beat the long lines in Aldeburgh. Leiston is less than a 10-minute drive from Aldeburgh, where you’ll find Seahawks, offering delicious fish and chips to take with you to the beachfront. This takeaway also has a restaurant just next door, much-loved by the locals.
Fish and chips in Felixstowe
Felixstowe, in south Suffolk, is a great example of a classic British seaside town. The centre is bustling, full of family-friendly activities, shops to browse, and historic architecture, while the wooden pier and sandy beaches are ideal for spending the whole day enjoying. We highly recommend getting a portion of fish and heading down to Landguard Point on the tip of Suffolk’s coastline. Settle in and take in Landguard Fort and the ever-busy Port of Felixstowe.
- Fish Dish Fish & Chips Restaurant – This seafood restaurant serves up expertly caught fish dishes, from the classic fish and chips to grilled whole sea bream. There’s something for everyone, and all of it is beautifully cooked and absolutely delicious.
- Orwell Fish & Chips – Thought of as Felixstowe’s best fish and chip takeaway, this is the spot if you want to grab a paper-wrapped dinner and hit the beach. Fish and perfectly fluffy, crispy chips await at this spot local favourite.
