Orford Castle
Orford Castle is what’s known as a ‘keep’, which was typically the strongest and most fortified tower within a castle during the Middle Ages. Usually, a castle’s keep was the main residence, as well as a last resort in case the rest of the castle fell during an attack. Orford Castle was ordered to be built in 1165, and construction was completed in 1173. Unfortunately, in the 17th century, parts of the castle’s outer wall were dismantled, and over time, they disappeared completely.
Today, just the strong and sturdy keep remains, and it happens to be one of England’s most unusual thanks to its unique polygonal design. Orford Castle is one of the best-preserved in England, with a recent renovation and repair project preserving it for generations to come.
This stunning castle attracts many visitors throughout the year, allowing guests to explore it from the basement all the way up to the roof, which offers beautiful views of the village, the surrounding countryside, and the ocean. Orford Castle facilities
There is a car park close to the castle, which is free for English Heritage members. If this is full, you’ll also find pay-and-display parking down the road. There are no toilets on site, but they are available in the village. Feel free to bring a picnic to enjoy on the castle grounds.
National Trust – Orford Ness
Orford Ness is a truly stunning, internationally important nature reserve bursting with thriving wildlife, coastal beauty, and 20th-century military history. The perfect destination for a full or half-day excursion, this location provides the perfect opportunity to get back in touch with nature. Orford Ness has an incredible amount to offer, including:
- The National Trust Ferry Octavia, which takes you across the River Ore and gives you the chance to spot seals and porpoises
- A rare and fragile landscape of vegetated shingle, the source of 20% of Europe’s vegetated shingle
- Three wonderful walking trails through the marshes and shingle (two of these trails are only open seasonally, so check their website before your visit)
- Old airfield marshes, which now provide the perfect grazing ground for deer and birds
- Numerous buildings built before the Second World War can be found across Orford Ness, from old atomic weapons research labs to bomb ballistics and experimental beacon buildings
Orford Ness facilities
There is a pay-and-display car park 150 yards away on Orford Quay. Toilets can be found on the Red Route by the Ranger Office, including an accessible toilet. Enjoy the secondhand book shop in Basecamp, and take advantage of the regular guided tours across the site.
Orford River trips
With lots of rivers around, there’s plenty to see on an Orford river cruise. Depart from the town quay at Orford and enjoy the haven of wildlife, birdwatching and harbour seals along your way. Orford Ness has played an important role in the nation’s military history, and many of the buildings you’ll see were erected during the Cold War. An Orford river trip will provide you with an insightful experience into its past while offering stunning scenic views of this picturesque coastal area.
Tickets are £16 for adults and £10 for children 14 years and under. Each boat from Orford Quay holds up to 12 people per one-hour trip, with dogs also welcome on board.

They even make their own chocolate, from bean to bar.
Pinney’s of Orford
Not just famous for its baked goods, Orford also boasts some of the most delicious oysters around. Pinney’s is a third-generation family-run business, fishing in the Suffolk Heritage Coast. They grow their oysters at Butley Creek and have a traditional smokehouse where they produce incredible smoked fish, including salmon. Visit their shop to buy excellent local goods, or stop by their restaurant ‘The Butley Orford Oysterage’ to indulge in an exceptional dining experience.
Does Orford have a beach?
Yes, Orford has a beautiful, peaceful shingle beach found on the edge of Orford Ness. While this beach doesn’t have any facilities, the village itself is only a mile away. We suggest stocking up on snacks and drinks beforehand and making use of the Orford Ness toilets before hitting the beach.
How to get to Orford
As with many of Suffolk’s smaller seaside villages, public transport access is possible, but requires advance planning.
The closest train station is Woodbridge, a 25-minute drive from Orford for those who don’t mind hopping in a taxi. You can also board the 70 Village Links bus from the Turban Centre in Woodbridge and ride it straight to Orford. The 70 Village Links bus can also be caught from Ipswich, from the Old Cattle Market bus station, straight to Orford.
