Not all holidays happen during the height of summer, so if you’re exploring Suffolk with your dog outside of peak season, you’re in luck. Seasonal dog bans tend to lift at other times of the year, opening up new beaches to visit with your dog.
Aldeburgh is one of our favourite places, and has a popular pebble beach with lovely views out to sea. While the primary beach area in Aldeburgh has specific restrictions during the summer months, it is dog-friendly between October and April, so your canine companion needn’t miss out if you visit during this time. The beach backs onto the town itself, so during the cooler months makes a great destination for relaxed wandering and exploration.
Tip from the locals: visitors seeking a dog-friendly environment all year round will be happy to discover the expansive shingle beach located just north of Aldeburgh. This beautiful stretch of coastline offers ample space for dogs to roam freely and play in the waves throughout the year. It spans the coast between Wentworth (famous for its scenic views) to the charming village of Thorpeness. It makes a lovely long coastal walk!

Southwold is one of Suffolk’s most iconic and popular seaside towns. The main beach tends to be buzzing and lively with families enjoying a day at the seaside during the summer, so it does operate a seasonal dog ban, but at other times of year you can bring four-legged friends along to walk on the sand and paddle along the shore.
Tip from the locals: dogs are welcome on the stretches to the south of the pier (towards Gun Hill) throughout the year. Stretching from Southwold in the north to the River Blyth in the south, the beautiful Denes Beach features a mix of sand and shingle, making it a great place to enjoy a stroll with your dog. A promenade runs along the back of the beach, which is also bordered by low sand dunes and marshland. After a walk on the beach, you can head into town, where many pubs and cafés will gladly welcome dogs as well.
