Best Beaches in Suffolk

Whether you prefer romantic strolls across the shore or building sandcastles with the kids, you’ll find a Suffolk beach that you love. We’ve created a list of Suffolk’s best spots which includes traditional favourites as well as hidden gems – all spanning the breadth of the Suffolk coast to inspire you to plan your next coastal holiday.

Covehithe

Voted by The Telegraph as one of Britain’s best 40 beaches, Covehithe is just a few miles south of Lowestoft and is one of Suffolk’s most beautiful beaches. There isn’t an ice cream seller in sight and very limited facilities, but well worth a visit if you are after a secluded spot to take in the scenery and paddle in the sea. It’s a favourite with dog walkers too.

Southwold

Charming Southwold is a favourite with both Suffolk visitors and residents. Lined with vibrant beach huts and just a stone’s throw from some fantastic independent shops, restaurants and pubs, Southwold beach is an undisputed classic. The quality of the beach has been recognised over the years by Blue Flag awards because the beach is not only clean but provides an excellent array of amenities.

Thorpeness

A charming beach in a quirky Suffolk village. The shingle beach slopes towards the sea with views of Aldeburgh to the south and Dunwich to the north. Whilst there aren’t facilities on the beach itself, it’s just a short walk from the village centre where you’ll find cafes, pubs and ice cream kiosks.

Walberswick

The unofficial crabbing capital of the UK, Walberswick beach is a great starting point to explore the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It’s a beautiful place to visit throughout the year. The beach is just a short walk from the pretty little village which means amenities are close at hand. In 2022 it was named in a list of the top 20 UK beaches to visit by The Telegraph.

Aldeburgh

This shingle beach is probably the best known of Suffolk beaches. Backing on the lively seaside town of Aldeburgh, there isn’t a shortage of facilities either. Along the beach are a number of historic buildings, including the 400 year old Moot Hall. But the best cultural experience to be had in the town are fish and chips which have been rated the best in the UK!

Dunwich

Tucked away on the Suffolk coast, Dunwich beach and the surrounding heath and woodland are one of the most precious Suffolk beaches, home to a plethora of lovely plants and wildlife. It’s quiet and serene, and an inspiring visit whatever the time of year. From July to September, the Heath is alive with colour; a patchwork of pink and purple heather.
